以下に記すのは北米版の週刊少年ジャンプ「SHOUNEN JUMP」（SJ）に掲載された栄ちゃんのインタビュー（2007年発行）と、栄ちゃんがSJ読者の質問に答えた北米版SBSのようなもの（2008年発行）です。日本では新出になる情報もあります。訳は私が適当に。日本語→英語→日本語となっているのでニュアンスが誤換されている可能性があります。悪しからず。

「”リアル”海賊王との対面」


Shonen Jump: If you gave Luffy a present, what would it be?
Eiichiro Oda: Meat. He probably wouldn't be happy otherwise.
SJ: And what do you think Luffy would give you?
EO: I think he'd give a piece of that meat back. [Laughs]

Shonen Jump編集者（S）：もしルフィにプレゼントをするなら、何をあげますか？

尾田（O）：肉だね。肉以外喜ばないと思うし。

S：お返しにルフィは何をくれると思います？

O：あげた肉の部分かな（笑）


SJ: Pirates seem like a global phenomenon these days on the Internet, in Hollywood movies, in video games. Did you sense that these seafaring adventurers would become so popular, back in 1997 when One Piece was first published?
EO: I wouldn't say I saw it coming, but I knew everyone loved pirates. I wanted to read [manga] about them when I was a kid, but there weren't any out there, and I kept windering why. I drew the kind of manga I wanted to read, believing that everyone naturally loved pirates, too.

S：最近では、「海賊」はハリウッド映画（→「パイレーツ・オブ・カリビアン」）やゲーム、インターネットでありふれたものになっているように思います。「ONE PIECE」の連載が始まった1997年当時、海洋冒険モノがくる！みたいな直感はありましたか？

O：流行る確信があったとまでは言わないけど、みんな海賊は好きだとは思っていたね。
子供の頃、海賊の漫画を読みたいなと思っていたけど、当時はそういうのが全然なくて、どうしてないんだろうとずっと思ってた。それで、自分が読みたい海賊ものの漫画を描いたわけ。きっとみんなも海賊が好きだろうなと思って。


SJ: One Piece is an incredible story with lots of colorful characters and unexpected plot twists. How long had you been dreaming about this adventure before you started following it?
E: Hmm... I was in junior high... so about seven years. I told myself, "If I did a serial manga, it would have to be a pirate manga!"

S：「ONE PIECE」は多くの面白いキャラクターや予想できない展開にあふれた膨大な物語ですが、連載を始めるどのくらい前からストーリー構想はあったのですか？

O：うーん・・・中学生だったから、、たぶん7年前かな。
「もし連載漫画を描くなら、海賊漫画しかない」って自分に言い聞かせてたね。

SJ: Have you ever been on a real pirate ship?
EO: No, not on a pirate ship, but I've been on a sailing ship. I know they aren't easy to sail in real life, but I can easily draw them as if they are in the manga. [Laughs]

S：本物の海賊船に乗ったことがありますか？

O：海賊船はないけど、帆船ならあるよ。
現実では船の帆走は簡単にいかないのは知ってるけど、漫画の中なら簡単に描けちゃうね（笑）


SJ: Do you get seasick?
EO: No, not really.
SJ: What did you think about sailing?
EO: It takes hard work to sail a ship. Everyone on board has to do their part, like pull ropes and such, or else the ship won't move. So it's not realistic at all to have moments of relaxation like there are in One Piece.

S：船酔いはしますか？

O：いや、別に。

S：帆走についてどう思いますか？

O：大変な仕事。甲板にいるものは皆、常に働いていないといけない。ロープを引っ張ったりとかね。じゃないと船は動かないから。だから、「ONE PIECE」で描かれているような甲板でゆったりしている時間は全く現実的じゃないよ。


SJ: Do you like to sail?
EO: I love to sail! I wish I could just sail off somewhere... [Laughs]

S：帆走は好きですか？

O：大好きだね。帆走で、ただただどこまでも行けたらなと（笑）

SJ: You're responsible for the most successful pirate manga ever created! Does the pressure of being so successful ever drive you crazy?
EO: No, I don't feel the pressure. I just draw true to what I want to draw, rather than feel the pressure and make compromises about what I really want to draw, because people have accepted what I've drawn.

S：尾田先生は史上最も成功した海賊漫画の作者であるわけですが、プレッシャーで気が滅入ったりしませんか？

O：プレッシャーはないよ。みんなは僕が描いたものを受け入れてくれているから、プレッシャーを感じたり、本当に描きたいものを妥協したりすることはなくて、描きたいものを描いているだけ。


SJ: Do you ever sing pirate songs when you're at home alone and nobody's watching?
EO: I don't know any pirate songs. I'd sing them if I did.

S：一人でくつろいでいる時、海賊の唄を歌うことはありますか？

O：海賊の唄を全然知らない。知ってたら歌う。


SJ: If you could swap places with one of your characters for a day, who would it be? And why?
EO: It would be Luffy, of course. Just once I'd like to be able to stretch like him.

S：もし1日だけ尾田先生が描いたキャラクターの一人になれるとしたら、誰になりますか？その理由は？

O：もちろん、ルフィ。一度でいいから、ルフィみたいに伸びる体になってみたい。


SJ: And who would you want for a brother or sister?
EO: Usopp might be the most fun to hang around with. I think we'd get along.

S：弟か妹にしたいキャラクターは誰ですか？

O：ウソップなら一緒にいたら一番楽しいかな。うまくやっていける気がする。


SJ: American fans love Chopper. How did you get the idea for him, and how did you go about creating him?
EO: I wanted a kind of mascot - and I don't mean that as something negative. I didn't want just a cute mascot, I'd want him to be fearless. Chopper may look cute on the outside, but he's tough on the inside. That's how I came up with him.

S：北米のファンはチョッパーが大好きです。どのようにして彼のアイディアを思いついたのですか？そして、どのようにして彼をつくり上げたのですか？

O：マスコット的なものが欲しかったので。別に、消極的な意味ではなく。ただ可愛いだけじゃなく、恐れを知らないマスコットが欲しかった。見た目は可愛いかもしれないけど、中身はタフ。
そんな感じでチョッパーの出来あがり。


SJ: Luffy seems to sleep a lot on any given day, when he's not eating or having fun with his crew. What does he dream about? Could it be eating? Or becoming King of the Pirates?
EO: He'd dream about something fun, in any case. Maybe he dreams about food most of the time.
SJ: Like what sort of food?
EP: Probably meat, since he eats a lot of it. [Laughs]

S：ルフィは食べてない時や一味と一緒にいない時はよく寝ているように見えますけど、寝ている時はどんな夢を見ているんですか？食べている夢？それとも海賊王になる夢？

O：どんな時でも楽しげな夢を見ているよ。たぶん大抵は、食べ物の夢かな。

S：どんな種類の食べ物ですか？

O：たぶん肉。肉たくさん食ってるから（笑）


SJ: Do you have a message for readers, like the ones who want to grow up to be pirates in real life?
EO: Well, it's fine to venture out to sea, but I wouldn't want them to be doing pirate stuff. [Laughs]
Well, maybe treasure hunting's okay... I'd say, please grow up to be upstanding people who are considerate of others!

S：実際に海賊になりたいと思っているような読者に何かメッセージはありますか？

O：えーと、海に冒険に出ることは楽しいけど、海賊行為はして欲しくないな（笑）
まぁ、宝探しならは大丈夫ってこと。他人を思いやれる立派な人間になってください！

Ashley Rochefort: Why does Tashigi look like Zolo's old friend Kuina?
EO: It's just a coincidence. There's no backstory like Tashigi turns out to be Kuina's sister or something...[Laughs]

読者（D）：どうして たしぎ はゾロの亡き友くいなに似ているんですか？

O：ただの偶然の一致。実はくいなの妹とかそんな話じゃないよ（笑）


Vicky Hutchinson: Zolo's my favorite character. I would like to have permission to be his #1 fan.
EO: Well, Vicky, all the Zolo fans think like you do. So please do as you wish. I'd like you to think that you're the #1 Zolo fan.

D：ゾロは僕の一番好きなキャラクターです。僕がゾロの一番のファンである許可をください。

O：えーと、ヴィッキー君。ゾロのファンはみんなそう願うと思うよ。だから、どうぞ君が望むままに。自分が1番のゾロファンだと思っていて欲しいな。


Normandy Peterson: I'm thinking of going as SHANKS for Halloween. Any tips?
EO: You need advice? Put on a scar. Draw a scar and make your hair red. That's about it. Don't cut off your arm though!

D：僕はハロウィンでシャンクスをやろうと思っています。何かアドバイスはありますか？

O：アドバイスが欲しいんだよね？（チップじゃないよね？ｗ）
傷を入れましょう。傷を描いて髪の毛を赤にする。そんなところかな。腕は切り落しちゃだめ！


Presley Porter: My favorite villains are Arlong, Hachi, the Meowban Brothers, and Kuro. Who are yours?
EO: Buggy, because he's easy to draw.

D：僕の好きな敵キャラはアーロン、はっちゃん、ニャーバン兄弟、クロです。尾田っちは誰が好きですか？

O：バギー。描くのが楽だから。


Diane Bree: How do you come up with Devil Fruits?
EO: When I think up a Devil Fruit, I always try to come up with something that fulfills a human desire. In the end, I don't think it's worth drawing one unless it makes you want to eat it when you see one.

D：悪魔の実のアイディアはどうやって思いつくのですか？

O：僕が悪魔の実を考える時は、いつも人間の欲望を叶える何かを考えようにしている。いろいろ考えてみて結局、みんなが読んで食べてみたいと思はないようならば、描く価値があるとは思わない。

Beniam Hollman: Is it possible to find Gum-Gum Fruit on this planet?
EO: Maybe you can find it by coincidence, like when searching for a treasure in a treasure box. Or might have to buy it from the black market fruit-and-vegetable shop.

D：この惑星でゴムゴムの実を見つけることはできますか？

O：たぶん運がよければ。宝箱の中に入っていたり、もしかしたら闇市の野菜や果物中に紛れてるかも！？


Abe Portugal: Who does Nami like?
EO: Hmm, in a romantic sense? I don't think there will be any romances among that crew. Nami probably sees all the good aspects/qualities of those guys, but One Piece isn't a romance. Maybe a lot of girl readers ask this kind of question. Boys are not interested all all. One Piece is basically a shonen manga, manga for boys, so romance isn't depicted.

D：ナミは誰のことが好きなんですか？

O：うーん、恋愛感情ってこと？僕は一味の中に恋愛感情は全く無いと思ってる。ナミはたぶん一味の野郎達の良いところは全部分かってると思うけど、「ONE PIECE」は恋愛漫画じゃないから。読者の女の子からは結構この類の質問がくるんだけど、男の子は全然興味はない。「ONE PIECE」は少年漫画、男の子の漫画だから、恋愛は描かないよ。


Lars Aarhus: Is Panda Man a master of disguise? Because my neighbor looks kind of like a panda with a fake mustache.
EO: Yes, I think so.

D：僕の隣人が付け髭したパンダみたいに見えるんですけど、もしかしてパンダマンは変装の達人ですか？

O：そうです。


Devin Johnson: I've been wondering about Panda Man. Is he following Luffy and his crew?
EO: He just happens to be in the camera frame. He's actually... being chased by gangsters called the Tomato Gang.

D：僕はパンダマンについてずっと考えています。彼はルフィや一味たちについて来ているんですか？

O：彼はたまたまカメラのフレームに納まっているだけ。実際は、トマトギャングに追われている最中。


John Irons: What is Luffy's mother like? Was she beautiful? What happened to her? Did she die when Luffy was a baby?
EO: I think she's alive. I'm still thinking hard about this. [Laughs] But if she does appear in the story, then she'll be a very tough-looking woman. And strict. There's no way that she's a beautiful mother. She's got this typical middle-aged woman's permed hair. Speaking about families, I did a backstory for Nico Robin and her family. That was actually the first time for me to draw a mother in a character's memory. Up until that point, I'd never drawn a blood relation. In Chopper's case, he's called a son even though he's not blood-related. So I've put in a message there saying that you can still call someone who's not related by blood your family.    

D: ルフィのお母さんはどんな人ですか？美人さん？彼女に一体何があったんですか？ルフィが赤ん坊の時に亡くなったのですか？

O: 生きていると思う。これについては今でも悩んでるけど（笑） ただ、ストーリーに登場するなら、すごい屈強な女性じゃないかな。そして厳格。美しい母親になるはずはないし。それで、典型的な中年女性がするようなパーマをしている。
　家族の話といえば、ロビンの家族の話を描いたことがあったけど、キャラクターの回想で母親を描いたのは実際ロビンが初めて。この時までは、（回想で）血縁のある親族を描いたことがなかったから。チョッパーの時は、血縁はないけど、「息子」って呼ばれてたね。血縁がなくても、家族って呼ぶこともあるってこと。

そして、バンキーナはウソップの実の母親ではなかったとう衝撃の事実（笑）！！！
